Easy Burden

Deuteronomy 28.48 “…And He will put a yoke of iron on you neck until He has destroyed you.”

Matthew 11.28-30 ‘”Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”’

It seems like almost everything Jesus did or said in the Gospels was a direct answer to something the Jews were suffering through from the O.T. In the second half of chapter 28 in Deuteronomy the Jews are being warned that if they turn from any of the commandments that God has set out they will be cursed in every way until they are destroyed. In Matthew Jesus just got done denouncing some cities for not repenting from their wicked ways. After that He says the Father has given everything to Him and that you can’t know the Father except through Him. THEN, this must have gotten their attention as if the other stuff didn’t, He says, in a sense, “I know what you’ve been going through. It’s your own doing, you turned away from your God. You’ve had your punishment. Now you know that there is no way you’re able to keep the whole law and be saved. So, I have come to ease your burden. I have come to give you, not a yoke of curses but a yoke of freedom.” He is saying to us, “I know you’ve blown it. You’ve turned away. You’ve had your punishment. Now you know that there’s no way to live without Me. So, come to me and I will give you an easy yoke with forgiveness and freedom.”

“Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again.”
‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭1:9-10‬
